Business interpreting

Business interpreting

I specialize in liaison (or business) interpreting in Italian, English, Brazilian Portuguese, and French, providing language support during company visits, pharmaceutical audits (AIFA, EMA, FDA), compliance interviews, foreign business missions, and assistance to delegations in Italy and abroad. This service is ideal when two or more parties need to meet in person in operational and decision-making contexts.

🗣️ What is liaison interpreting?

It is the activity in which the interpreter translates fluently and immediately during a meeting: institutional interviews, meetings, business lunches, and gala dinners. The goal is to ensure clear, smooth dialogue that is faithful to the intentions of the parties, while also facilitating conversation and creating a climate of mutual trust through cultural mediation if necessary or requested.

🧭 When is it the right choice?
  • Commercial negotiations and contract drafting
  • Visits to factories, construction sites, excavations, laboratories
  • Technical training, testing, plant start-ups
  • Institutional and diplomatic meetings
  • Trade fairs and B2B events, incoming buyers, press tours
  • Delegations on mission (incoming and assistance)
  • Pharmaceutical audits (AIFA, EMA, FDA)
  • Compliance interviews
  • Lawyer/clients interviews
🛠️ How I work (step-by-step)
  1. Identification of initial objectives: objectives, participants, work program, and activities.
  2. Preparation: study of materials, technical glossary, abbreviations, and acronyms.
  3. Operational agreement: timings and the NDAs’ signature if requested.
  4. On-site or remotely on dedicated platforms, if applicable.
  5. Follow-up: debrief and, if requested, terminology report.
📋 What the service includes

  • Management of the pace of conversation
  • Cultural support on style, register, and protocols
  • Basic logistical assistance (access points, routes, badges)
🧑‍🏭 Visits, training and site inspections

During visits to plants or sites (factories, construction sites, excavations), assistance to participants by translating operating instructions, HSE procedures, demonstrations, and technical Q&A, maintaining safety, clarity, and confidentiality.

🎪 Trade fairs and missions

For trade fairs and institutional missions, I coordinate match meetings and follow-ups, facilitating the meeting between supply and demand with concrete, goal-oriented communication.

🧠 Tone, culture, and “nuances”

In negotiations, nuances, timing, and implications are important. In addition to translation, I integrate intercultural awareness: formal/informal register, courtesy, handling of “negative” responses, and unspoken messages (body language)  which change depending on the nationality of the participants.

🔊 In person and remotely
  • On-site: meetings in conference rooms, site visits, business lunches
  • Online: video calls on Zoom, Teams, Webex
  • Hybrid: part of the team on site, part connected remotely.

Questions and answers about liaison interpreting

What is liaison interpreting?

Liaison interpreting, or business interpreting, is a form of oral interpreting in which an interpreter translates in real time between two or more parties speaking different languages, facilitating communication and mutual understanding in informal settings, meetings, business meetings, and bilateral diplomatic meetings, business negotiations, business lunches, and gala dinners without the use of technical equipment.

The interpreter does not simply translate literally, but also acts as a cultural and sectoral mediator, adapting to the level of formality and context and creating a flow of conversation.

In which languages is the service available?

The service is offered in Italian, English, Brazilian Portuguese and French.

In what contexts is liaison interpreting used?

It is suitable for:

  • Company visits and factory tours
  • Business and contract meetings
  • Technical training or practical demonstrations
  • Business missions
  • International fairs, exhibitions, and events
  • Assistance to Italian or foreign delegations
  • Pharmaceutical audits (AIFA, EMA, FDA)
  • Compliance interviews
  • Lawyer/clients interviews

What is the difference between simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpreting?

  • Simultaneous: for large events and multiple languages → requires technical equipment.
  • Consecutive: for official events on stage in theaters or cinemas or even small groups → more time, but no technology. Consecutive interpreting is often combined with chuchotage. For example, the interpreter whispers the questions asked by journalists to the interviewee, but then the answer is translated into the microphone or aloud to the entire audience.
  • Whispered interpreting: It may or may not be combined with consecutive interpreting: for one or two guests → agile and discreet solution, no equipment required.

Is the interpreter present throughout the entire event?

Yes, the interpreter accompanies the client throughout the event or visit, providing continuous language support and adapting to the pace of the meetings.

How does the interpreter prepare before the event?

To ensure an effective service, it is useful to provide the interpreter with:

  • Program of the event
  • Technical or informational material about the company
  • Names and origins of participants
  • Objectives of the meeting

Preparation is an essential part of the service.

How far in advance do I need to book the service?

It is advisable to book at least 1-2 weeks in advance, especially for events abroad or during periods of high demand (September, October, April, May, June).

Is the service also available outside Italy?

Yes, interpreting can also be provided abroad, subject to agreement and logistical arrangements.

Does the service also include the written translation of documents?

No, document translation is a separate service, but it can be requested together with interpreting. We recommend specifying this when making your request.
